Here's what you need to know about hacking and terminals in Fallout 4. Finding the right password can take ages if you aren't used to hacking. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can streamline this process. We've updated this guide with more information on how hacking works, the Likeness mechanic, and we've added some tips that should make this minigame much easier.
A lot of people tend to prioritize lockpicking over hacking. However, hacking can actually be a major advantage for just about any type of character build. Many locations around the Commonwealth have terminals that allow you to unlock new areas , control security systems , or even activate robotic helpers to fight for you.
Moreover, much of the game's lore and secrets are found on these terminals scattered all around the world, so hacking them for more information will give you hidden knowledge and can even start secret quests for you. Terminals can also point you to locations where you can find something significant such as loot, so there's no real reason to ignore hacking.
For those who would rather master the art of hacking on their own, rest assured once you understand the mechanics of it, it's not as convoluted as it might seem. You'll be given four attempts to find the correct password, each word you select counting as one attempt. If you fail all four attempts, you'll be temporarily locked out of the terminal. There's no limit to the number of times you can hack a terminal, and the minigame itself doesn't have a time limit.
Every word you select in this minigame will give you a Likeness rating. A word's Likeness refers to the number of letters that align with the correct password. Both the letter itself and the position of said letter must match the correct password to increase that word's Likeness.
That might sound confusing on paper, so let's give an example. Just type them in the big text box, separated by spaces or enters. It will show you the words that could be the password, which means that initially it will show all of them. Pick a word, and choose it to guess the password in the game. When the terminal answers with the number of correct letters, click on that number behind the word you chose.
The display will be updated to reflect the words that you can still choose from. I published the algorithm used for hacking as a Python script back in Looking at how many are correct in each of your guesses, along with the similarities of the words you've guessed will help you figure out the correct word. It's all a process of deduction. Just be careful to exit the term before the four attempt as you'll be locked out if you fail it and will need the computer whizz perk to be able to re-access the locked terminal. INXSive82 is correct, I just happened to use the first letter as a match in my example, sorry about that.
